Hasta la vista Classic!

OS X Supreme Being
Last week I reformatted my PBG4 drive and reinstalled OS X and all my apps. I had no Classic apps left that I used, so I didn't even bother with installing OS 9.

Tonight, I removed OS 9 from my main desktop machine, and can now declare that I am OS 9 free. I hadn't booted in to OS 9 in months, and after accidentally clicking on a JPEG associated with PictureViewer and having Classic try to start up, I finally pulled the plug on it.

So who else here has finally burried OS 9? And I don't mean "not having booted or used it". I mean having wiped it from your harddrive.

i've been meaning to get rid of Classic on my iMac for awhile now. but, i can't trash my OS 9 System folder because it is "required" by the System. or so the Finder tells me, everytime i try to trash it. and i don't want to reformat...i'm not sure exactly what to do. but i definitely want to wipe out Classic.

I had the same problem on my desktop. What I did to get around it was delete all the contents of the System Folder first, then using a little utility called Obliter8 (which calls the command line utility RM), I was able to remove the System Folder itself.

Voila! No more Classic.

hey, thnx for the suggestion. this has been bothering me for awhile, i'm glad to see you found a way around the same problem.

:::::edit
worked like a charm. thanx again, Serpico. :)

I still have it at work on my G4, because I need MYOB Accounting Plus (which here in the UK hasn't been ported to OSX yet!!!:( ).

The only other thing that was stopping me was this damn crappy Umax USB scanner, but VueScan seems to support it now, hurray!!:D

My iMac is OS9 free. Yipeeee!

It's Adobe's fault that Classic's back on my TiBook (although only 9.1). Not because they haven't delivered this or that app yet, they HAVE delivered what I wanted/needed.

But guess what the Illustrator 10.0.1 update *requires* to install? Yes! A Classic System!!! I could have erased classic right after updating Illustrator, but I figured that the next Photoshop or InDesign update might require a Classic Env., too.

Oh well...

OS 9 is now gone from my iMac again. OS X seems to run better without it. Here lately, OS 9 had been giving me trouble. Perhaps it is rebelling from the grave? Anyway. I had deleted it a long time ago, but had to go back because I bought a camera that only worked in 9.

When Jaguar comes out, I will reinstall classic if I have to. Then reformat as OS Extended and knock it back out :)

Until a suitable OS X native replacement for ResEdit comes out, I can't give up Classic. Plus, there's still all those Classic games like Crystal Quest and Loony Labyrinth that must run under Classic.

I don't think I'll be deleting Classic for a long time.. although 99% of the time it is shut down.

The only thing I need classic for is to run XPress...

...well, I'm not using it a lot anymore... but for all my old documents and for some new jobs I still can't do without it :(

At home I'm not using it since I played Starcraft online a few months ago... under OS X it just quits when the game starts!!! I hate that!

Anyway, I love X... and 10.2 will be the final solution for all of us ;)

Ciao
