Have Ethernet...Mail/Entourage outgoing mail problems.

Hi there. I am at a university where our internet provider is Ethernet. I have Mail and just got Entourage and both have the same problem. I can receive mail, but cannot send it. I don't know if I'm supposed to have a certain outgoing mail server for ethernet or what, but I've tried all the options I have. Is there something I need to change in my preferences? Does anyone know how to get my outgoing mail going? Thanks so much. :o
 
you have to set the outgoing server.

usually smtp."something".com or mail."something".com. Sometimes it is simply mail (the router doing the corresponding translation).
 
I heard about this problem that might have something to do with the internet firewall settings of your provider (university). You should ask your admin. Maybe you will need to setup a vpn client for this?! I know, it sounds weird since you are able to receive your emails but you should remember that smtp and pop use different ports..
However, did you ever try with another email account? If you have just one, simply sign in for a free service somewhere and test the account. How is it for other ppl?
And can you ping the pop and smtp server?
 
Hi there. I don't know anyone else who has a mac, or a mail program like outlook or anything. They have no problem obviously with their webmail.
I'm trying to use another acct, for excite.com...How do I figure out the server settings for that? Is it: incoming: mail.excite.com or pop.excite.com, and outgoing: smtp.excite.com?
I've tried all of those and it's still not working, but I think the settings are wrong cuz it comes up with a different message, basically telling me to check my settings and try again. Thanks for the reply.
 
Ok, I've talked to Earthlink and to my school. One tells me to talk to the other. I think I'm gonna go insane! :eek:

Turns out I need to use the outgoing mail server from my school: mail.uwf.edu....
