having trouble with mail

I have a gmail account and have in synced in with my mail icon. For some reason, it will not load any new messages and is thinking all the time. It has been doing this for about a day. I recently went to my email on the web and added new folders/labels and i didnt know if this had something to do with it? Also, i have a message that keeps popping up in my recovered message folder that i aleady sent out and know that it got to who i sent it to. Any help would be much appreciated, hopefully im not an idiot. Thanks
 
Have you restarted Mail at all since this started? There may be stuck processes which you could also try stopping in Mail's Activity window. If it continues, you might try rebuilding your mailbox or removing and re-adding the account. (Assuming it's set up as IMAP, you won't lose anything because all your mail and folders are stored on the server.)
