HD (HiDef) or DV video editing on external Harddisk

I am currently using a MacBook Pro 15" which has a Firewire 400 port. But my harddisk is getting full and will not be enough for video editing so I wanted to try an external harddisk.

Has anyone here tried this before on a Firewire 400 external harddisk?

Thanks
Michael

I used to. If you are using Final Cut Pro, The raw video WILL need to be on teh laptop, or eles your system will lag like crzy since it has to "source out" the raw file.

Just put stuff on the external drive you can do with out, then use the laptop for editing.

Maybe I could shift the iPOD music and iPhotos over to an external drive.

Have you used a FireWire HUB as I only have one port on this MacBook Pro?

Thanks
Michael

No, i have not, i just had it hooked up directly to the Laptop....

Say you capture all the footage and you have your capture sctrach, and autosave vault and all that to the hard drive...it will take for ever to make a cut, since the program has to find the master clip, resource it, an then make it...so it has to go to the external drive find it, then come back... Make sense?

Just set up your main harddrive for video, and use the external for MOST of your music, photo's and all that. i have 2 500 gig drives in my quad g5, i use one for my Video owrk, theother, is just personal use.
