HDRI, cinepaint, and X11

I'm using Maya more and more especially hte use of IBL with HDRI images in my Mental Ray renders. However the only app which used to work was cinepaint. Sinc eupgrading several versions of OS X to the latest version, cinepaint always crashes whenever I try and modify an HDRI image. Does anyone know if there is a better HDRI software than cinepaint? Something compareablr to HDR shop on the PC? Thanks
