Heehee. France is going to have a hard time advancing to the second round...

Unofficial Mac Genius
Final score last night: FRANCE 0, URUGUAY 0 (one of France's guys DID get a red card, which most likely explains why Uruguay could hold off France)

           Points        Goals For      Goals Against

France        1             0                 1
Senegal       4             2                 1
Denmark       4             3                 2
Uruguay       1             1                 2

There are only 2 games left in this group: Senegal v. Uruguay, and France v. Denmark.

Even if France wins its game vs. Denmark, the decision on who's going to advance is going to come down to the "Goals For". Which means that if France gets only 2 goals in it's game against Denmark, then Senegal cannot score any goals and Uruguay must score a goal against Senegal. But that means that Uruguay must win, giving that team 4 points, 2 goals for and 2 against, so it could be possible for France to advance that way.

If France wants to assure it's advancing, though, it must win against Denmark and get 3 goals for. Again, though, neither Denmark or Senegal cannot score any goals, which is a big "if".

France is in trouble no doubt about it.

Yeah...the only better result would have been Uruguay beating France cause then they wouldn't have anything to play for when the meet us. But if they keep playing like that it shouldn't be a big problem winning over France.

Btw...I'm not sure if this is what you are saying about how to determine who goes on to the next round, but right now Denmark has a (+1) score and France a (-1) score and so on. Next after this if two countries are equal it is the one with the most goal's.

GO DENMARK!

GO DENMARK!

What kind of scoring convention is this?

The standard is: 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, and 0 for a loss.

Anyway, I have to concur: GO DENMARK!

True...I was just pointing out how in they determine who goes on to next round in case of a tie between two countries. I was talking about the differences in goals.

example: denmark has scored three times and let in 2 - ie. (+1).

I believe they actually keep them separate.

So you could advance if you had 2 goals for and 100 goals against while the other team has 1 goal for and 0 goals against.

It depends on the competition rules, which in this case are:

The ranking is determined as:

1. The greater number of points obtained
2. The goal difference
3. The number of goals scored

If two teams are then tied then the game(s) between the two teams is used to differentiate them:

1. Points
2. Goals (not sure about this - is the points are tied then the goals will be tied surely).

and then by drawing lots by the FIFA world council.

Not true...in case two teams are tied after rule 1-3 has been looked at, it's their match which desides who goes on.

Say Denmark and France is excatly equal it will be who won the game between us and them which desides goes on.

edit: sorry, I just read your post wrong. You are correct. ;)

[edit: due to paragons edit]. Just to clarify: the official rules state that after the two teams have tied then the game between them is looked at in the following order:

1. points
2. Goal difference
3. Goals scored.

However, if they tie points (ie it is a draw) then the other two will automatically be tied as well. I can only think that they put that in there in case that there is more than two teams involved. I have re-read the rules a few times and that is definitely what it says.

It will then go to the toss of a coin by FIFA - what fun.

[Further Edit] GO DENMARK! May we meet in the next round.

R.

Are you sure they look at the goal difference? I thought it was just points, goals for, goals against, and then the match between the two teams.

of goals for, and goals against;) ;)

Come M Owen!!!! Come E Heskey!!!!! 2 each against the Argies pleeeaaazzzzeeee!!:D

Thanks for the nice words Roger...now we're counting you guy's to beat the Argentinians, but only if we come in second and you guy's first. :D

If there is one thing we don't want it's meeting Argentina in the next round. They look very strong and is going to be the team to beat. Now tell Owen to duplicate that goal he scored the last time you guy's met. ;)

SimX:

I am sure that they look at goal difference - it is almost universal in Football and it is in black and white in the World Cup competition rules.

Check out the link - the bit we are talking about is on page 26:

FIFA Worldcup Competition Rules

Paragon: I'll have a word with Owen. ;) . We are due to meet France if they come in top and we come second. However that might be good enough for us looking at the way they are playing. I will be happy if we can just get out of the group - it was going to be tricky even without all the injuries. We should have a better shaped team today, but with lots of players still very recently out of injury, I am not very confident. Either way, I have taken the day off to watch some serious football.

Latest: Paraguay 1 (og) : Spain 0 in 1st ten minutes.

R.

Hey, I'm watching that game too, so far Spain has been that impressive.

Also Nigeria is out, Sweden beat them 2-1, although Nigeria gave them a though time the last half hour. A vry good game I think.

Spain look good, but they are taking too long getting the ball into Paraguay's box - they are not incisive enough. If they passed in a few earlier crosses then a couple may be off target but they may catch the defence unawares. So far most crosses have been near-perfect, but the defence are waiting for them.

I hope that Spain do well - they have always underperformed for the players that they have.

R.

3-1.

Penalty scored by Hierro, while Chilavert fell like a dead stone. =)

On the other hand, the penalty was not crystal clear.
Chilavert shot a good one but Casillas catched it in good order.

Good game...maybe we'll see a Spanish team playing with a little more confidence than they usually do during the World Cup. Atleast they are now through to the next round, and being the first team to do so.
