Help! -Blacked out iMac screen

My wife's iMac screen is black- checked with a bright light and cannot see anything. With screen sharing, I was able to take the picture attached to this-- I don't know a way to boot up to use the Apple Hardware Test via screen sharing since it goes into a special boot up with no screen sharing available.

The screen was flickering occasionally over the past couple of days, and the computer was on for about two days straight from playing games all day each day and downloading the WOW trial overnight (it's 10gb now!). The screen suddenly blacked out this morning.

Anyways, the Graphics/Displays tab of the system profiler shows "No information available".

My question is, "Do I need to replace the graphics card (I do know how intensive that is), or does it sound like a software issue that can be fixed?"

This is a late-2006 Core 2 Duo 2.16GHZ 24" White iMac running 10.6.5. I'm pretty sure the computer has the 7600GT 256MB graphics card.

My wife dual-boots with Windows 7 for gaming- nothing too graphics intensive- Guild Wars, Overlord, Diablo 2, Runes of Magic, and we don't have a TV, so if we watch anything, it's over Netflix or Hulu.

Would be good to rule out the graphics card by trying an external display. You would need the relevant mini-DVI adapter for the display. If you get video on that external, then the vid card is likely good, and you probably have a failed LCD panel.
