My macbook has all of a sudden been running at really high CPU speed. In activity monitor it says its mdimport thats doing it. Ive quit it tons of times, restarted, repaired disc permisions. Nothing. All it does is repopen and start running at 100%. Please help.

Oh and im running 10.4.10

mdimport is a crucial process for Spotlight, the OS X file indexing engine. It is short for "metadata datastore import", and whenever you create or copy new files to your Mac, this process kicks off. It imports file data into a database so that Spotlight can find the correct file when you perform a search.

Read this article for some options to help performance;

Also, use software update, as Tiger is up to 10.4.11

If you're connecting any external disks to your mac, it will try to index them too. Try dragging the entire HD to the "privacy" pane of Spotlight, which should stop the indexing. Indexing is processor intensive, but should not take overnight.
