OK...I am a newbie hare and am sooo glad I discoverd this forum. I didn't think I would need the help so soon, but I do. Here's the story...My assistant deleted a few GB of folders & files we needed. I tried to recoved them with TechTool Pro. Something happened while trying a directory recover and 3 of the attached 8 firewire hard drives now have directory problems. (They don't show up on the desktop and I get the "Drive not recognized, do you want to initialize" message.) I have tried Tech Tool, Disk Warrior, Disk Utility and Drive 10. Drive 10 did offer to rebuild the directory, but the comparison showed over 65,000 files before and 950 after! So, I opted NOT to replace. I am stuck.....where should I start? I have disconnected each drive and left the others connected to the base machine. I have the problem ones with me, hoping I can maybe resurect them one at a time. Where do I start? HELPPPPPPP!

I can only say that I vouch for Disk Warrior. It has saved me every single time. I'm surprised DW didn't do it for you. Do you have the latest version?

Depending on the value of your files, you might want to get a professional data recovery specialist. Using more tools and tricks on the drives could deepen your problems, instead of solve them. Then again, the programs could work, and it would be a lot cheaper than a specialist..

Filesalvage has a free trial edition, try that before putting 80 bucks into it..

I highly recommend Data Rescue. It's saved my butt many, many times over the years, from OS 8 to Tiger. It costs $99, but the free trial will let you recover one file at a time so you can see if it'll work before spending any money.

I've never used FileSalvage, so I can't compare the two. All I know is that Data Rescue has done the job for me when nothing else would.

(Note: Data Rescue has two methods, a quick mode and a thorough mode. Oddly enough, I once found the quick mode to work when the thorough mode returned corrupt files. So try both.)

You might try Drive Genius to recover the files...I've had great success with it when everything else failed.

Wow...thanks so much for your quick and insightful ideas. I never thought of searching for other software. I had always heard the programs I had were the best. Just goes to show you CAN teach an old dog new tricks! Hopefully I can help others in the future as you have helped me!

Thanks!

Jeff
