HELP! How do I use this Airport with a PC?

BlingBling 3k12

Somewhere... dunno though
How do I connect the AirPort (version 1... the first generation) to this new Sony Vaio at work? It's not cooperating AT ALL! We have a Siemens SpeedStream PCMCIA Wireless Adapter...

Any help with this would be appreciated!

Buy a Mac ;)

I don't believe the AirPort card is compatible with any other wireless network devices--correct me if I'm wrong someone! Which kind of makes sense, because then Apple can (and does) build in compatibility (i.e., exclusivity) into their machines.

youre wrong.

airport is 802.11b, i have never used one though so thats about all i know

I think he is trying to connect to the AirPort base station via the PCMCIA card on the VAIO, since AirPort is WiFi compliant, it should work... But I don't know the details, sorry! :(

I have an smc access point and my tibook with and airport card in it, works just fine with it. My friend has a mac and a pc and both can connect to his airport base station as well... tis the beauty of the 802.11b standard :)

I don't use AirPort myself, I'm wired.

Thanks for correcting me, ya learn something new every day :p

BlingBling,

I don't have my V1 airport now that I have V2 but I did have my IBM laptops talking very well to my V1 airport. On the Sony, can you "See" the Airport but not use it? Or not see it at all? I had trouble with WEP enabled. The trick is getting all the details right when setting up the PC configuration. One caveat is ... if using WEP, you need to enter the WEP password on the PC in a special format. You also might be limited to 40bit WEP and if you have 128 bit enabled on the Viao then it won't work. There are several articles in Apple's knowledgebase... two are posted below. If you look around you'll also find success stories that might help you.

Cheers
Don

this is for our boss.... he's 100% macs (he has 3 G4's in his office) and pretty much hates PC's... (i don't know why he bought a VAIO though...)

thanks for all your help anyways... i kinda needed it all within about 2 hours of posting the message...

i think the problem is with the PCMCIA card... this one didn't even do what the instruction book said...

i'll tell my boss on monday...

thanks!

it could be the card try these PC 802.11b PCMCIA cards in your Sony. These are pretty much rock solid compatiblity:

and have great range.

also make sure your settings match up of course. (try both with out any type encryption to see if that is the issue since some cards have issues with the encryption)
