I don't know what happened but I assume that iPhoto downloaded and installed an update by itself because between the time I used it earlier this afternoon and when I fired it up this evening it decided that my library needed to be updated/re-imported in order to work with "this version" of iPhoto (also warned me that my photos would no longer be readable by earlier versions). I went ahead and clicked 'okay' having never had a problem with updates to this app in the past but after it was done working I was left with a library of photos that numbered some 200 fewer than had been indicated earlier in the day. Also, all of the albums I'd created are gone.
'About iPhoto' shows version 6.0.6 (322) now. I honestly don't recall what it was before beyond 6-something.
I backed up everything in my Home folder just a few days ago - is it possible to restore my library from that backup? I didn't do any special exporting from iPhoto - just copied the entire home folder over to my external RAID.
Also, has anyone else experienced this particular problem? I had iPhoto set to check for updates automatically in the preferences but I didn't expect that it would just go ahead and INSTALL said updates without asking first.
