Help... I think I accidently removed a driver for my system 10.3 when I was cleaning out while in 9.2 on my G3 powerbook Wallstreet. When I changet to start up w/ system 10.3 I get message "panic Darwin Kernel version 7.0.0"
I have tried to start up with the CD by using command C without success.
How can I start with system 9 again?
command option O F does not work either.

DO you have the Panther install discs? Just perform an Archive and Install of OS X and that should do it.

I do have the disks but I am unable to get the CD to be recognized even when starting by holding down the "c" key.

Have you tried Command-Option-Shift-Delete? That should show you available startup volumes, including the Panther disc if it's inserted.

If none of these startup keys works, then you have something more problematic than a deleted file. You may have a troubled logic board, or you may have set an Open Firmware password.

You should also make sure you're holding down these keys on the PB's actual keyboard, and not an external USB keyboard.

I tried the key command and the computer did not change when it started up. Is there a way I can restart with system 9?
Thanks

If you can't get the machine to recognize key commands on startup, then you have no way of influencing how the machine starts up.

One additional question: any dead ports (USB, etc.) on this machine? Those can trip up the logic board.

One old standby is to reset the PRAM, which means holding down Command-Option-p-r immediately after restarting, and until you hear a second startup chime. Read the end of this document to see exactly what this resets. It may not help.

I just tried Command-Option-p-r and I had the same results... A screen with typed messages over a window that says to re-start the machine. I do not have any dead ports but I have noticed lately that the sound does not work until I have been using the computer for some time. It was giving me no problems when I used only system 9. I also recently upgraded with a 256 memory chip. could that be part of my new problem? (It has been working fine since I got the chip 3 weeks ago.)

I will try doing starting it without that chip... my hesitation is that I only have 64 megs in the primary chip.

I have just removed my 256 chip and the computer would only display the "?" and 2 faces logo. It DID recognize Command-Option-Shift-Delete and other Command-Option commands ... but I could not get it to open with system 9. The CD did work but it would not read the disk.
