What master password? Are you referring to the OpenFirmware password before the eMac boots up, or is this the password to his user login account?

You don't need the password to install a new OS. You just need a retail Tiger CD. Holding down the C key while booting up, with the CD in the drive should start up the install. There's also a startup disk chooser in the System Preferences, where you could choose the install disk to start from. You might want to call him and tell him that you accidently messed his computer up, even if he does have everything backed up, it can be a hassle to restore everything. And it's the honest thing to do.

If it is the user password , DO NOT REINSTALL! To reset the password, boot with the Tiger DVD and when the first screen comes up, go to the top menu items and look for "Reset Password" option. Your bacon is saved.

i cant get into his account but can get into a guest account on the machine dont want him to know i was at this bleedin thing so i thought if i upgraded his software through the guest account he wouldn't kick my head in went and bought tiger os 130euro ouch brought home when i click to install the machine asks for the master password which i dont know really sorry about this lads i know im askin a lot but please he will probably throw me out the window if i dont fix this

and remember my dog frodericks steak dinner hangs in the balance...

Thanks Again Here's a famous saying from ireland for ya's
You've got to do your own growing, no matter how tall your grandfather was.

If I were you, I would be honest and let him know what happened and that as a way to show you're sorry you bought him a copy of Tiger for his eMac. Then, boot up the eMac from the disc and at the welcome screen for the installation, choose from the menu to change the password of an account. Then he should be good to go.

Next time, think twice before playing a prank on someone's computer, especially when you're inebriated. There's nothing funny about that especially if said person who owns the computer has some important files on it.

If by chance it's not booting to the disc when holding down the C key, it's possible that his eMac doesn't have a DVD-ROM drive. You might need to see about replacing it with a CD-ROM version from Apple.

01. Inserting the Tiger Install DVD into the eMac, and booting (the Mac) will not cause the boot process to happen from the DVD.

02. With the TIger Install DVD inserted, reboot the Mac, pressing and keep pressed the '<option>' key. A list of possible boot drives will appear. Once the arrow cursor (eventually, within 60 seconds) appears - select the 'Tiger Install DVD' and then click on the '-->' button.

03. Follow Satcomer's suggestion.
