help-powerbook prob-screen 'washing out'

hope someone can help?

i've got a poorly powerbook G4.

the problem is that the screen washes out. that is to say the display will start to turn white until you cant see anything with horizontal lines running down it.

if you power off and on straight away all you get is the fan running but nothing else happening.

if you leave it off for longer periods it will work but only for a few mins.

at first i thought it was overheating in some way but as the fan appears to kick in i'm not so sure?
could it be the graphics card?

am really stuck on what to do so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks for reading.

How old is your PowerBook? Do you still have a warranty on it?
Take it into an Apple store, if there is one near you, and have a Genius look at it. They should be able to tell you what you can do, in terms of repairing it or having it replaced altogether. If it's new (less than a year old), I would take it in immediately.

thanks for the reply dennis.

my p/book is over a year old so no go on the warranty front.

took it into my local apple store on friday and they 'think' it's the mother board.

gonna cost me about £120 GBP for them to fix and about the same again to do the work so around £250 GBP all in!

ouch!

That is a lot. You should try to do one of two things, being that you have no warranty anyway.

1. Get someone other than Apple to work on it. Have them get the part and do the installation. I don't know if you have companies that do this in your area, but it's worth checking. We have CompUSA here in the US that will do this sort of Apple hardware work.

2. Get the motherboard yourself, on eBay, or from another source, and then take it somewhere to get it replaced. I doubt Apple will do it if you buy the motherboard somewhere else, but you can ask them
