hi everybody,

a problem with my new printer canon ip4200. after installing the software i try to add the printer with the printer utility. the name of it shows up as "iP4200" but i can not add it because there is no driver available, although i installed the packaged cd and the newest driver from canon.com a few times... all the drivers that show up under "canon" are the old gimp drivers for other canon models.

any help is greatly appreciated.

regards

If you have Tiger, try this:
In Printer Setup Utility, click on the menu choice Reset Printing System, found just above Quit Printer Setup. Then restart the Mac, then try ADDing the printer again.

thanks so far.. i wont get to my computer until tomorrow then i will try resetting the printer utility. using 10.4.5 by the way... maybe that has something to do with it since canons newest driver officially only supports up to 10.4.3 or so.
@hoovergreeneyes: any luck so far?

ok i tried resetting the printer utility, installed the drivers again and it still doesnt work... interestingly, when i choose "more printers" (or "other printers"? i am using os x in german so i'm not sure) in the same window where you have to select the driver/printer model, printer utility instantly crashes... maybe there is a connection?

clueless,

jcs,
Since we have no way to figure out which file is corrupted, I recommend you reinstall OS X using the Archive & Install option in the installer. This will keep your documents and settings and applications, but replace all system files.

hmmm oh well i thought i might get around that. maybe not. will try that tomorrow.
thanks so far.

Well, I spent an hour on the phone with Canon Tech Support uninstalling Canon files and reinstalling Canon printer drivers both from the CD and the website. I still couldn't get the printer browser to find the driver and add it to the printer list. Canon referred me to Apple Tech Support.
I
The Apple Tech rep and I went through the same exercise again, and miraculously it worked. Until I restarted the Powerbook. No printer, and when I tried to add it, the system could not find the driver. It seemed to recognize that there was a new one, but I kept getting error messages to the effect that the server was unavailable.

I called back, the tech rep had me check the hard disk through disk utility (nothing out of the ordinary appeared) then reinstall the printer driver from the CD, which took forever, and instead of adding the printer directly through printer utility, did it via system preferences. It worked.

I honestly don't know what made the difference, but I have the printer working through a USB connection. The only advice I can offer is call Apple Tech Support and have them walk you through it all.

Good luck!

OS X Tiger has printer drivers pre-installed. I actually found that installing the HP printer driver CAUSED the problem. I also had to reset the printer system every time I wanted to print. If you opted to not install the OS X printer driver at install you can install just the printer drivers you want by running the printer driver package by itself on the OS X install DVD. I AM NOT AN EXPERT. This is what worked for me with an HP printer. Good luck all.
