So I recently screwed up my finder, it wouldnt let me logout/restart/shut down or anything.
So i moved all of my home directory to another user, wiped my original account then started reinstating all my files. I have all my bookmarks back in safari, buddie lists in my im clients, old mail in mail etc
But how do I get back all my old settings for programs such as mail, settings like message 'rules' etc...
Thanks..

Those would be stored in either the .plist files or in the user's "Library" folder under "Application Support". Some applications go against this convention and store such data in the root "Library" folder, so if you didn't back that up, then it may be lost.

Did you reformat/reinstall, or simply create a new user and move stuff over?

I just moved the contents of my home directory over to an existing users account then trashed and recreated my old account so, everything should be backed up, don't have time to back-up and reinstall from scratch ... (:rolleyes: why does something like this always happen when im in the middle of exams?:rolleyes: )
When you say the root libary folder do you mean the root users libary? or just the main system one?
Also when i trashed the user, it should just erase the contents of the user's directory,it wouldnt have trashed any files it had stored in the main libary would it, just looked through it doesnt seem to be any less folders but then again.....
Thanks man!

nope, couldnt find any .plist files for mail, got the ones for some other programs but cant find any of the prefs for mail, oh and another thing, now everytime i go to drop something in the trash my mac tells me that it will be deleted imediatly... why is it doing this?anyway to stop it?

::EDIT::
Just fixed it, it was an incorrectly set ownership on the desktop file, but still cant resurrect all my prefs & rules for mail...
::EDIT::
