I have broadband installed at home and want to get onto it through the iMac G5 i am getting without wires...

Dont want to spend lots of money setting it up - but it defo has to be done...

Also want the gf's laptop to wirelesly connect also if possible but the main thing is getting the mac connected...

SO what hardware would i need in order for this to work and how would i set it up??

I already have the broadband modem IF that can be used somehow ??

Cheers

PS.. rememeber i am in the UK, when talking about buying

Hi Nooster,
please use our very comfortable search button on top for this subject. I think we had 28435 threads on that.
Just a short notice: you can take any 802.11g router out there. Most of the ppl use dlink or netgear. If your gf doesn'T have a wifi card, get her one over card bus or USB (even cheaper).
Good luck!

^^ Sorry mate... i am a mod of another forum and i am always telling people to use Search and here i am not bothering - in future i will use it...

I think the excitement has gone to my head....

Thanks.

Found this D-Link DI-624+

http://www.dlink.co.uk/?go=jN7uAYLx...3kP98f8p8Nqtg6jw6VHqqnHtB84kMFNzl2KbpLU8Wseg=

Cost is about £50

Is that one any good - or could i get one better...

Oh and i would like to spend less than £50 if possible, but if not then no worries.

ALSO the gf does have wifi.... whats the "one over card bus or USB (even cheaper" ?? - Sorry didnt understand that

hehe, I am using the dl-624 (without +). I recommend it!
If your gf didn't have a wifi, she could have bought a 802.11g card over the card bus (pcmcia) or using a 802.11a usb dongle.

Is there advantages to having the + version that i was looking at??
If not then the non + version will be cheaper right ??

I ment to put doesnt have wifi....

However i am thinking about getting her a wifi card that way everything is done wirelessly and no need for ugly cables ;)

The "+" actually stands for the low-end models. However, the only thing the dl-624 has in addition is the support for two channels at the same time and thus doubling the 802.11g speed to up to 108mbit/sec.

ALSO I have found this
Product - D-Link DSLG604T Wireless ADSL Router & Free Wireless PC Card
Website - http://www.simply.co.uk/productinfo...L+ROUTER+WITH+FREE+WIRELESS+PC+CARD/index.htm
Price - £75 (ish)

Its a D-Link, which are apparently one for the best.
its only £10 more than the Belkin one and this comes with the card to go into the laptop, so the gf can get online.

What you think of that??

Heres the offical website link
- http://www.dlink.co.uk/?go=jN7uAYLx.../hKltbNlwaaRp6zgtAmu5j3cf/YEMAM7h3aPmLU0Ste4=

I forgot i didnt want usb.... this one is also a couple of £ cheaper.

iMac G5 - connect to it wirelessly ok using the airport card built in
PC laptop - uses the FREE PC card you get to also connect wirelessly.

PLEASE tell me the above setup will work without problems ??

Thanks
Darren

It should work!
Just make sure the pc laptop of your gf supports the pc card. Everything else sounds fine.

^^ Yep it supports PC card - has the slot in the left hand side for one :)

Thats asuming that if it has a slot it defo supports it lol
