help with new eMac, AOL

Some friends of mine just got a new eMac. Unfortunately their ISP is AOL.

I guess AOL doesn't come pre-installed.

So, I have to go over there later with week with a burned CD to install.

A few questions?

1) Do the eMacs allow you to boot into OS 9? Does OS 9 come pre-installed?

2) To test, I installed AOL for OS X on my own system. I have DSL so I just wanted to login using their username/password to see if there were any suprises during the setup.

I told AOL I had DSL. It never would connect. Furthermore, it NEVER asked me to enter a username/password. It would only allow me to do "New User" or "Guest".

They are current AOL users on a PC and they'll want to keep their same account. How do I tell AOL just to use their old username/password? PS they are now and will be still on an AOL provided dial-up.

When you install AOL it will take you through the setup for user name and password and selecting dialup mumbers. When you installed on your machine and said you had DSL, that screwed up the install for that particular user, since he's using dialup plan.

AOL accounts can be moved from Mac to PCs and from PCs to Macs, that shouldn't be a problem.

The user name for that installation is set up right after installing when it first connects to AOL.

I guess I don't understand why you need Mac OS 9. Is there something about Mac OS 9 that they need? I've set up AOL on two client's eMacs and another client's iMac and iBook without ever needing to use any resource provided by 9.

Go into any kind of electronics retailer or Office supply store, there almost always a stack of AOL CDs near checkout for free. The AOL 8 cd that I'm looking at right now has every possible combination for Macs from AOL 4 to 5 to X. I've used this on a number of OS X systems, Install, AOL then launches, asks if you're a new user or existing user, AOL asks for user name and password, connects (hopefully) and assuming a current account, sets up the login screen for all current users on the account, Works that simple. Use the OS X version, IMHO very stable, compared to AOL of the past.

If they want to use their current account, have them sign in as "new user".. sometime during the setup process for a new user, it will ask you for an existing account name an password. Aside from that, easy as pie.

And, I agree. Use Mac OS X, and the AOL for OS X. Pretty dang stable, compared to the OS9 stuff.
