Help with PowerBook G4 and word??

:( I have a prob and need some help. I am trying to open word docs from the desktop and they wont open??? I try to open them from `my docs` and they wont open?? I get an error message and code.Its says compatibility error??? I can only open them if I load word first.I am sure this is not normal as I never had to do it on my PC.I am a complete novice mind you!! All help `greatly` appreciated.

reinstall word from the installation discs, maybe? also, if you had a version of word you installed, and still had remnants of the TRIAL version that came with your powerbook, that could be causing a conflict. that happened to me, but i removed everything pertaining to the trial version.

try ctrl+clicking on the word doc on your desktop, and going to "open with" and checking "always open with this" box. that might help.
