cannot drag and drop anywhere (desktop or files). I have a Imac 400mkh, using v10.2.8. This just happened. I have been deleteing files on hard drive lately but this didn't happen immediately after one of those deletions so I don't think that is the problem. Any suggestion on where I can start to troubleshoot?

Verify/repair disk permissions. HD>Applications>Utilities>Disk Utlility>Select your HD> and verify/repair disk permissions.

Zapp your PRAM too :P during bootup hold SHIFT+APPLE+P+R and wait untill you hear 3 chimes then let go :)

tried pram reset, disk permission/verify...no luck. According to apple discussion/forum this is a known fault with 10.2 software. there are lots of suggestions, so far, nothing has worked. Next is to replace pram battery...it's about 8 yrs. old. thanks for the reply.

Did you delete files from your system or just your user folder?

Do you have more than one user? Does this happen on your user only or the other users too? It could also be something with your user settings (so if the other user is fine, we could then see which preference is corrupt).

If it's for other users too.. since your system is at least 4 years old.. it can be also time causing some issues. I might consider downloading the 10.2.8 combo update and installing that on top of your existing software - that may fix it, and without going to any more drastic operations such as reinstalls.

10.2 was so cool when it was out ...

Hi giaguara, yes, happens with all users and I have downloaded the 10.2.8 update how ever i can't drag it to the application folder so it's on the desktop. will it work on the desktop or do I need to get it to the app folder first? To answer your first question... I was deleating both files and folders. The main reason I did this was because my 9.5g harddrive is getting full so I was trying to make some space. I had the old classic program on there still so I thought being I never use it anymore I could get rid of it. I'm starting to think that was a bad idea.

The upload should work also installed form the desktop.

If that won't fix it... I'd suggest backing up the data on your Mac, and doing then an erase and install. Getting everything back set up as they were after will take a while, but considering your hard drive size, spending any space in useless archive and install would be just waste.

Have you thought about replacing the hard drive with a bigger one (they are way cheaper nowadays than when you got you Mac)? 100-120 GB would probably be plenty of space for your needs, and would make the Mac usable way longer. Another option would be getting an external hard drive for your files.

hi giaguara, those are all things i've been avoiding however it's probably going to end up with a start over... or a new unit. My knowledge on how to get a larger hard drive, install, back-up files and start over is from the v8.6 era so I'm going to have to dive back into the apple knowledge base and do a little refresher coarse. Thanks for your suggestions.
