Hiding Dock?

Can someone tell me whether it is possible to hide the dock in the same way as the task bar is hideable under Windows 9X - basically it stays hidden until you move your mouse to the bottom of the screen. What would also be nice is the ability to move the task bar's location - having used OpenStep, which hard the wharf, I would like be able to move it to the side of the screen, so it is vertical instead of horizontal.

in finder go to the application menu > Dock and Desktop Preferences...

go to the 'Dock' tab, there is a check box for 'Auto hide and show' that will mimic the winders taskbar.
