High-pitched sqeaking/squealing PowerBook

Howdy
My boss' PowerBook 550 (i think) has started to make a high-pitched sqeaking/squealing noise when he starts it up. Kinda like when you put a microphoone to close to a speaker. We don't know how it started or how to turn it off. Eventually it stops (few seconds) but it's SO lound and SO annoying.

Any clue what might be going on?

Well, if it's as you describe, it could be feedback.... and since the PowerBook G4's internal microphone is RIGHT NEXT TO its left speaker, you might want to try just lowering the volume to zero before you shut down.... dunno why it would be taking soun in from the mic during startup though... very odd. Check sound settings.

Yep it's the mic to close to the speaker. If we turn off the mic, then restart, it comes back on automatically at startup. SQUEEEEEKKKKKK
