Hinky Airport signal - why?

In a room about 25-30 feet from the ABS, the signal varies greatly as I move around the room -- from full strength to almost no signal at all -- and all within 25-30 feet. It seems to weaken as I move a little closer to the ABS, in fact -- but still 20-25 feet away. Does the signal somehow vary depending on the configuration of the room?.....like sound acoustics?

The configuration of the room really won't effect the signal, but the properties of the walls and what is between you and the access point will.

Metal, water, other 2.4 GHz devices all will reduce the quality or strength of your signal.

What is between you and the ABS?
 
I had so much trouble with my AEBS. The signal strength was awful, i thought it was my airport card, but it was the base station. I don't think it was other 2.4 GHz devices, because i bought a netgear 2.4 GHz wireless router and i can go anywhere ih my house -- even my driveway.

But for such short range differences, check your airport settings. Did you mess with the transmittance power? Or reduce the radius? (most people do this to prevent others from leeching off their wireless signal)
