Hi
So my parents asked me what I want for my 21st in November, so I have whole month to think about it...
I was thinkin of upgrading my 2nd gen 10Gig iPod to 4th gen 40Gig, and gettin one of those record microphone adapters so I can record lectures.... What do you think, should i hold out for another boost in the ipods? I thought there wouldnt be one until at least after Christmas until I started reading rumors about 60gig with iPhoto integration/colour screen<again> and so on...
http://www.macosx.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46842&page=1&pp=15&highlight=ipod+record

.... i dont want to watch iphoto/dvds on my ipod or export these to an external screen, but i would like the extra 20 gigs in hard drive.....
Plus if they were to launch these there would probably be a huge demand for them during the christmas rush.....

So does anybody think they are worth waiting for? and also which recording module should I get? the griffin iTalk, or one of the Belkin ones, (one of them has gain control)?

Or should i get something else altogether...??, i was also lookin at the Palm Tungsten T2/T3,....

Also, just remembered, my Powerbook is going to be 3 this month :D ... have to get her something too.... maybe some ram/hard-drive/superdrive... :D

Do a list of your wishes, then rate them in priority. Did your parents give you a set dollar amount? That may hold your list down.

As for the iPod, if you want the extra gigs, wait for it. :)

RAM for your computer is always good, along with a Superdrive along with extra space on your Hard drive.

If i was you I'd go for the Tungsten, i love mine granted it's only the E but it would be great if it had Bluetooth

I second the extra memory idea of RGrphc2. I see in your sig. that you only have 256. your system performance will increase a good amount if you upgrade to 512 or even 768+MB. my system had 512 for the longest time and recently I upped it to 1 GB. I can really feel a difference.

Ask them for a new Powerbook with maxed out RAM? You could always sell your old Powerbook to raise some cash if the price of a new powerbook is more than what your parents are expecting to spend.

I wish i got that for my 21st in March...i got 40 bucks for the bars that night. I was planning on buying my Sister's old Motorcycle (she got a new Harley-Davidson), but when she wouldn't sell to me i bought myself my Powerbook.

yeah. how much are your parents willing to spend on you? all that stuff is really exspensive (at least to me) the most exspensive birthday present ive ever recived was a used thinkpad.

I think they'd be willing to go to bout €400 ($ish 400) at the most but plus the wee bit extra (€20) for the iPod, if i really wanted the 40gig....
man dear, Viro, I would love to ask them for a new powerbook but the budget wouldnt stretch that far and besides that would be a bit cruel to Xanadu (my Powerbook), to trade her in on her birthday :)
The ram, well I've been saving for that for a while, and it'll only come to £sterling 70, so think i'll be able to get that anyway, no matter what...blue&whiteman/RGrphc2 what are your'e setups? cause im experienceing a real performace lag that I dont think should effect my machine especially when compared to my sisters 867MHZ powerbook, especially with startup times which are a pain in the arse...

Oh by the way, did anyone here put a superdrive/combo drive into their Pbook? was thinkin of gettin my parents to buy me one of those, instead, so I could install it myself but not sure if i'd be confident enough to instal it myself....

The thing is the money I've saved up for the ram , (£50 at the minute) could instead go towards a sony/ericsson t630, which is another gadget I would really like.... the keyboard on my nokia 7210 is really crap plus it can't sync with the mac

my setup is in my sig. osx seems to care more about ram than cpu speed. I know this because my friends yikes 350mhz with 1GB ram was a tad faster than my mac (500mhz) it seemed when I only had 512MB.

feed osx as much ram as you can and you will be happy.

the slow bootup is because of the laptop drive. all laptop drives are slow. cpu speed has little to do with startup, its all in the hd. my ibook 1GHz was a great system but I like desktops better and my wife used it so much more than me so I just gave it to her. my pimped out tower is all I need. :)

Sorry, should have realised that you would be attached to your mac. I know I am :)

In that case, you could always max out your RAM. Crucial have some pretty good quality RAM sticks and they're not too expensive. http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/PartSpecs.asp?imodule=CT64M64S4W75&cat=RAM

Or, if you could search ebay UK for some good deals on RAM.

With the left over money, just get a faster notebook hard drive. A 7.2K RPM drive is going for something like £100 at the moment, and that should speed things up quite a bit.

Excellent, where's selling those drives and what size are they viro?
Might just get my parents to buy the iPod and start saving again for the hard drive, ....
Just ordered 512MB from crucial :D, £76+free delivery, seems quite good
and ah yes I can see your sig now, I didnt see it last nite cause I was readin your post in the 'reply to topic' screen which doesnt show the sigs...

mines in my sig as well, bought mine about 4 weeks before the update (damn it! ) oh well. I really dont see a difference in speed, i'm using the same programs on my PC w/ a 2.6GHz P4 & 512MB of RAM, and they both run about even.

90% of my programs on both machines run the same, its really funny, cause my Brother-in-law claims that mac is slower.

grrr... postman came when I was in bed this morning, never heard the doorbell... so gonna have to wait til monday/tuesday to get my ram now...

but anyway so I've pretty much decided to get the ipod... but which microphone module thingey should I get? the Griffin iTalk or one of the Belkin ones? which ones better?
I primarily need it to record lectures, so I need one that will pick up a voice in a room good and clear but would also like it to have a line in so I can record off the radio/tv etc...
