Homemade HD enclosure

I recently purchased a seagate 200 GB 3.5" drive to put in an old maxtor firewire external drive enclosure. The drive has successfully been installed, and is powered up. I cannot, however, get the drive to mount. I understand that it hasn't been formated for Mac yet, but don't have any idea where to begin, as nothing shows up in disk utility. Any help would be appreciated.

Some older enclosures, from Maxtor, Seagate, and the like, will not accept hard drives that are not the same size as the drive that originally came in the enclosure.

What model of drive is it? Have you checked with Maxtor about compatibility with 3rd-party drives?

It's a 200 GB Seagate Barracuda ST3200822A. To be quite honest, I never thought about the fact that the enclosure might not work. Guess I'll have to spend some more of my wife's money and get a newer one that will.

The drive enclosure origionally contained a Maxtor 120 GB; model 5000DV.

Check to see if the Seagate hard disk drive is jumpered as 'cable select'. If so, change the jumper setting to 'master', and try again.

Jumpering the drive to Master got the system to recognize the new disk; however the 200 GB drive is only being read as 128 GB. Looks like it's time for a newer firewire enclosure. Thanks to all for the assistance.
