There appears to be a lot of questions/responses regarding this topic. None answered my question.

This is what I have:
HD/Users/hisname

I want:
HD/Users/myname

FYI:

Under accts. MY info is there.
Using terminal I have no luck it says invalid argument.
I do not have Net info in my utilities.
I can not edit anything under directory utility.

I am running a G5 with 10.5.8. No disc included w/ the OS. I purchased the computer from a friend. I have transferred all my info but under home (house) it has his name not mine. When I go to install-(sometimes) it lists his name and asks for the password. I delete and enter my info and pass. Something does not work -I need to know if it is because of his name before I can discredit anything else.

THX 4 the input.

Yes I have seen both articles.

The 1st which asks you to enable the root menu;
Finder go menu-what is that?
I went to Finder/Apps/Util
Open Direc. Util.
(this is an icon of a map and compass)
The screen I get is blank with no ability to select anything.
It does not allow me to enable root.
How do I do this w/out root access?

Click on Finder in the Dock and look up on top of the screen, you should see the following:

Finder File Edit View Go Window Help

To enable the root user follow these instructions.

1. From the Finder’s Go menu, choose Utilities.
2. Open Directory Utility.
3. Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
4. Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
5. Choose Enable Root User from the Edit menu.
6. Enter the root password you wish to use in both the Password and Verify fields, then click OK.

Afterwards you should disable the root user for security purposes.

The easier way is to follow the simple suggestion from Apple found within that first link:
... the easier and safer workaround is to create a new user with the desired name, then copy the old user's Home directory contents into that of the new user.
Better yet, you don't need to enable the root to complete that suggestion.

Bbear-THX, I should have figured that out.

I did that, thought it was fixed-it isn't. I restarted my computer and it came back. I am now also locked out of my desktop & documents folder.

Thinks are on the whack with my computer but I would appreciate your input on this. I may just have to go back to OSX.3.
