For example say I wanted to edit text configuration files that are in /etc or in /opt/local , I would have to open finder and at the top click "go to folder" and type in the path.

Is there an easier way of this that I can just have a nice navigation view starting from /

And say I have textedit open and I want to open a text file in /opt/local how would I browse the filesystem in textedit to open that file? All I see is the standard , desktop, my home, and basic folders.....

You can use TinkerTool to get Finder and all open/save dialogues to show the normally hidden *nix folders.

just downloaded tinkertool and enabled the nix folders thing but I still dont see a button or somewhere to click that will let me browse from /
