How Can I get my mac to start up on it's own?

JetwingX

iWork for Apple <3
because here in cali i will get my head choped off if i leave my computer on (stupid Enron and PG&E) so i want it to start up in the morning so it can wake me up (getting it to wake me up is the easy part).
i don't know any UNIX so if it has to be that give me step by step instructions

Well, you can just put it in sleep mode at night. As of now, Mac OS X doesn't support auto-wakeup or auto-startup times. Maybe in 10.2?

I know for a fact that OS 7.5 to 8.6 has an auto start-up/shut down feature. I know becase we were using it at school, but then something went wrong and now none of the clocks keep time :S

Obviously it was removed from X (and 9 I think)

The scheduled sleep / wake-up features were lost in the move from classic to OS X. I have seen a third-party tool called EnergyX (find it on versiontracker) that claimed to do this, though I have seen mixed reports on it. Worth a try, though...

This was a fun feature. I never had a real use for it, but I can see where it could be useful for both a server and workstation use.

I suggest everyone who really thinks this feature could be useful to them to give apple feedback at www.apple.com/macosx/feedback

I hope we see a boatload of stuff from Classic Mac OSes in 10.2. If they don't have the basics down by 10.2, then there's a major problem.

It's there in OS 9, I use it at school...well, used to use it. We don't get to do it any more due to fire-safety regulations. Apparently it's bad to have the Mac on from 7:30 AM to 16:00 PM in vacations, and they don't trust us to turn it off...

SERVER NEVER go to sleep.... that s the work they do...;)

Not all servers have to be on all the time. For example, you could have a powermac in a closet running OS 8 that starts up at 8 AM every day and checks a pop mail account and performs an action like faxing the contents of the mail to someone's house or starting at a certain time to be ready to receive a daily fax. then when it's done, no need to suck up power, so it shuts down 'til the next day.

Just for the record, it IS possible to make your Mac OS X Mac start up at a pre-defined time. Just start Up in OS 9, set your time in the energy saver control panel, set your startup disk (or folder) to your OS X one, and PRESTO!
Your mac will start up in OS X!!

I can confirm this with my Powerbook Pismo 500. I schedule daily audio recordings from the radio using OS 9. If I happen to be traveling I have seen the computer wake from sleep at the time specified in the OS 9 energy saver control panel.
Unfortunately, this CP cannot be accessed from Classic.
