How can I remotely connect to a PC

Hi all,

in my office I have a Pc network based on windows XP. At home I have a Power Mac G4.

Does anyone know if it is possible to control a windows xp server from my mac G4 remotely though the internet?

How do I connect to the server? something that I do not understand is how my computer at home can see the server at the office?
What will be the server id?
Do I need any static IP address?

i use ms's rdc all the time to connect to my win xp box from my mac. it also makes it easy to copy files between the too.

then with a little vnc help to connect to my mac from xp, i got this:desktop forever.jpg

the thing I do not understand is how to configure the server (windows XP) to access it from my client Power Mac G4?

That is a Microsoft problem along with firewall issues. Remote Desk topping to a Windows computer is done in lots of places. Most system administrators will tell if if they ALLOW it to be done. The same network issues come up even if you were trying to remote from a PC. Use the help file in your Remote Desktop Client application and it will point you to the how to.

To expand on what Satcomer said, you have to go through a few steps, provided your network Admin will allow you to use RDC.

First you have to go into the Windows System Properties, the Remote Desktop tab, and allow Remote Connections. This USUALLY enables the port in the Windows firewall. If not, you have to allow it manually and choose what to allow in the "scope" option.

You may need to use VNC to connect to your network from outside of your workplace. This will get you through any firewall on the network with the Windows PC. Again, your network Admin can let you know if this is allowed and should be able to help you set it up.

I've found that, using RDC, it's best to use the Windows computer's IP address (rather than name) and specify the port. For example, if the computer's IP is 123.4.56.789, and the windows firewall has port 5115 open for remote desktop, you would put 123.4.56.789:5115 into the address bar AFTER you have VNC'd into the work network. You will also need to put in the username and password from the Windows PC that you want to log in with.

That's everything I can think of from my experiences with RDC. Good luck connecting.
