How do I combine a "linked image" and a "clipping path" into one shape?

On one of my layers in my Illustrator file, I have a group that contains a linked image and a clipping path (which forms the shape of an M). I would like to have it so that when I select the M shape, it only selects the shape, excluding the large rectangular shape of the linked image (that is masked behind it). I have tried many things including: embedding the linked file, unclipping it, etc etc.


I want to retain the letters I have made with a mask...as editable letters
without the back ground.....it's like I want to make a photo
of the letter as is without being attached to backround.
 
Select the image with the black pointer tool, then using the white pointer tool deselect the mask by holding down option and shift, (if you don't hold down option you'll only select part of the mask), you can now move the image separately. If you want to move it again because it is not in the correct position go undo and this will move it back to the original position with the mask still deselected. It's annoying I know...it would be easier if one could simply lock the mask.
 
You could just click on the M shape line with the white arrow tool. Hit command Y to make it easier to see.
 
all you have to do is select the image (it should select both images with clipping path) and in your Pathfinder palette, select divide. This should knock out the background outside of the m. If it doesn't disappear right away, then click ungroup and select the area you want to discard seperately, then command x.
 
export the clipping path from photoshop to an illustrator file, then bring that file into illustrator and you're done!
