How do I get subtitles to work on 10.4.6?

I have a movie and there are subtitles with it. Both .sub and .srt files. How do I add these to the movie so that the subtitles play while i'm watching the film.

I've tried with VLC and MPlayer, but I just don't understand how to get it working. I've also searched the net and the forums but can't find a solution.

Can someone please help me.

VLC will do it. When you go to the "Open file" option, you'll notice a checkbox "Subtitle options". Check it. There should also be a subtitle settings button on the open box. If you go into that, you can select the subtitles file, and it should appear when you're playing the video.
