I want to hear audio from a particular website. The site offers windows media player as a way to listen. I click on this and I was told that I don't have windows media player and I need to download it to listen...click here. So I clicked and downloaded windows media player for mac osx. Then I click the new icon for windows media and I get the following message: "There is no default application specified to open the document "Windows Media. sitx"...Choose application" This is not the first time I have received this kind of message. In fact I have not yet been successful in opening ANYTHING I have downloaded because I don't know how to get passed this "Choose application" part. This has got to be basic Mac knowledge because NOWHERE in the manuals can I find instructions about on how to proceed. Yes I'm new to Mac. Will someone please give me some advice on how to or where to look to learn???

You want Flip4Mac in order to play Windows Media using QuickTime.

Microsoft is providing this because they are no longer developing Windows Media Player for OS X. Still, you can download it (as you have already done) but it's not a Universal Binary (which run natively on Intel and PowerPC Macs) like Flip4Mac. This means that it will run under Rosetta (the PowerPC hardware translation layer for Intel Macs) and performance will suffer.

If you REALLY need Windows Media Player for Mac, you're going to need Stuffit Expander to uncompress the .sitx compressed file.

You might have trouble uncompressing if you have an intel machine. Furthermore, using WMP 9 as a plugin will not work, so, as nixgeek said, try Flip4Mac.

StuffIt Expander is Universal Binary. Therefore, the OP should have no trouble unstuffing anything on any Mac that he may own. I do, however, echo the previous suggestions to install Flip4Mac.

When you download a file, that file may be compressed in the "Stuffit" format. No, I'm not insulting you, that is the name of the application that compressed the file.

It wouldn't be very effective to have you download the expander if the download were in Stuffit format, so you will want the "dmg" file that contains the Stuffit Expander application.

OS X should know what to do with the dmg file when you double click it.
After double clicking the dmg file, copy the Expander application from the newly mounted disk image, to wherever you want.

Once that is completed, you will be able to download "sitx" files and open them by double clicking them.

Oh, and sorry for the lame link above. Unfortunately, I know of no better way to download that software. Naturally they want to make getting the free software as annoying a process as possible. :P

They've made it a UB? I probably should look at their site to see if they've updated before I post.. sorry.
