how do I install airport in imacG4?

I have a 17" iMac G4 (just now discontinued) with 800 Mhz processor (see my signature for more specs). My model came out just before the extreme cards, so I have to use regular Airport.

I have an Airport card but it does something weird to my computer when I try to install it. The darn thing won't boot up! Black screen; fan turns on; no start up chime.

the other problem is I have to install the card label toward the motherboard (so the label is hidden from view when you first take off the user install plate on the bottom of the iMac.) Basically, to me, this feels like installing it upside down, but it won't fit any other way.

Any reasons why this is happening? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Does it boot normally after you remove the airport card?
Did you touch / hurt by mistake anything in the iMac board while trying to install?

The computer did boot up normally once I removed the airport card. It looks like a refurbished/used card too. Bought it from smalldog.com.

I made sure to discharge any static before I installed the card.
