how do i make changes to become generic

a) I don't even know what the hell this means.
b) If you want to hide file extensions, open the "Preferences" option under the "Finder" menu while the Finder is the active application. Switch to the "Advanced" pane of the resulting window, and uncheck "Show all filename extensions."
