how do i record directly from minidisc/vinyl onto my mac?

ok,ive just got the freeware version of 'Audacity' from the Apple site and i want to record from minidisc & vinyl and convert them to MP3...but it just seems to be recording through the front two speakers (if i talk into them it will record it)

...how do i bypass that and record directly from a line in? (the 'line in' option isnt appearing in the drop down men)

help would be apprecated

Go into System Preferences and select Sound. Click on the Input tab and select Line In from the list instead of Built-in Microphone.
