How do i upgrage my MAC OS X 10.1.5

Hi,

I am a Mac virgin and recently bought a second hand iBook. i currently have OS X 10.1.5 wich i have managed to update from the internet, but i don't know how to get it up to speed....any suggestions would be much appreciated as i would prefer to not have to go to a shop and pay a fortune to sort it out. My friend gave mr the insallation discs for MacBook OS version 10.4.9 but when i try to run these i get a message saying 'Unable to find driver for this platform "powerbook 4,1"

System Restore discs will work only with the computer model that they shipped with. You will need a commercial distribution of MacOS X 10.4 to upgrade your computer to the this version. Using Software Update, you can update to MacOS X 10.4.11. To learn more about your specific model and the OSes that support it, look here.

Is it possible that your iBook doesn't have DVD-R capability? Is it a G3 or G4 iBook?
Take a look at "About this Mac" (click on the blue Apple at the upper left of the screen) to see what your iBook specs are.
My understanding is that OSX 10.4 was the first OS that required DVD for installation, which is why my flat-screen iMac G4 (700MHz) with only CD-RW has OSX 10.3 as its operating system.

Installation discs for MacBook are hardware specific, restricted to MacBook models, AND require Intel processor.

What speed is your iBook? How much RAM do you have?

Considering your iBook has 10.1.5, it should have max 700 MHz G3 and support max 640 MB RAM - realistically, 10.4 would be slowish unless you have 640 MB RAM, and 10.5 won't install (867 MHz G4, 1 GB RAM min).

With 10.1 or 10.0. installed you can run software updates up to 10.1.5, but after that you should buy a new install disc. Realistically, if you have 640 MB RAM (and if you don't, get more RAM, it will make a huge difference), 10.3 is probably the best choice for you - it is very stable. Or 10.4 will run but may feel a bit slower (but will be more future proof for the next 2-3 years for software etc). 10.3 install discs (again, look for ones that didn't ship with a Mac as they are always hardware specific builds and won't work) should be cheap e.g. at ebay, and probably 10.4 discs are cheap by now too.
