How do YOU get a new Mac?

Got it when it was the latest and the greatest. Obviously it is no longer either of those.

I'm really excited about Panther, and I'm Especially excited about Expose and Pixlet.

I have read enough to know that niether of these will run particularly well on my fairly aged 550mhz G4.

What do you guys think I could do to get a faster G4?

I don't really want to sell the current PB that I have..

I know there is a simple answer: Get a job..

But... what else do you guys do to quickly get the cash for a new Mac?

I really want to be able to take advantage of some of these new features but it's not going to be possible on my PB.

Thanks.

Other than Pixlet, Panther will be faster on your G4 than Jaguar... For sure... Is Pixlet that important to you or you are trying to find excuses for a new Mac? ;)

Pixlet is kinda sorta important to me.. I really like high quality video. (Is that a lame reason?)

I can't see how Expose wouldn't be tasking on my Mac already..

Those are the two main features, anyway.

I'm semi trying to find an excuse to buy a new Mac. Most graphic intense software (games, renders, large movie files) seems to run pretty sub par on my Powerbook,.. I've only got like 4 megabytes for my graphics as far as I can tell.. and uh.. that sucks. I can't run a simple screensaver without the computer revving up the fan and getting hot as can be.

My current PB just doesn't have very good support for graphics.. I can't play things like Unreal Tournament, or even Myth, (you guys remember that game?) without trouble.

This sounds like the computer you have. 16 MB of VRAM is decent, but for Quartz Extreme and anything else to really behave well you need more than that. It's really not enough for Unreal Tournament, though Myth 1 and 2 should be fine with that. Myth 3 requires a bit of crunching power.

I don't think it's lame to want high quality video at a small file size, but where are you going to get the actual video content? If you're a filmmaker, then by all means get the best computer you can afford to run Pixlet at a smooth speed. However, if you simply want to watch Pixlet movies, then I say good luck finding them, because I doubt many people are going to support it since it's currently Mac only.

I read that Pixlet isn't going to be a consumer codec (you're not going to be able to to encode your home videos with it) - From what I read, It's strictly a studio codec.

So I don't think you're going to see it that much outside of Pixar (and other studio houses), unless Apple enables the codec for consumers.

Sell your organs, but only the ones you don't need to survive, like one of your kidneys and maybe half of your liver. Don't let them take your heart, stomach, intestines, or brain, or you may be in trouble, though. ::love::
