How do you guys make your OS X look so darn awesome???

All this stuff is way over my head. I was an intermediate OS 9 user, but with OS X I'm a novice.

I want to be able to customize OS X so that it looks like

for example. This guy even has AOL Instant Messenger for OS X.

Another cool thing I found is a computer with OS X that has the dock in the upper right hand corner of the screne<br>

What are some really cool things that I can do to make Mac OS X really cool?

I've looked throgh the forum and I couldn't find anything. Leave me any links that might help me. Thanks.

One of my faves -- you could always make your terminal transparent, like this:
http://www.freeke.org/images/TransparentTerminal.png.
You can find directions for doing that at http://www.macosxhints.com.

The AOL IM client that person was running is called Fire. It works well. You can find links to it (and a ton
of other stuff besides) at http://www.versiontracker.com, in their MacOSX section.

There's nothing out of the ordinary there really.

jEdit (Java not Japanese)
Napster
Mac Blox
SoundJam
Terminal
IE 5 Carbon
CPU Monitor
and of course: Grab :)

The terminal shot would have been way cooler with that transparency trick (I use it now though) :)

I had SoundJam on 9, but the 30 trial ran up so I just didn't get it again. I think I'll download it for OS X.
I use HTMLEdit for making my web pages. (Is jEdit a web site app?)

I just got Fire and it's awesome. It's good but not great. Eh. It's carbonized so I'll use it.

While I'm getting my Mac pumped, what are some other neat apps you guys like to use?
 
jEdit is a massive text editor written in Java. It sounds scary but it really is great. :)

You might look at IRCStep or JediKnight for IRC.

OmniWeb for web browsing.

Get OmniDictionary which is a way cool network dictionary app avaiable to ALL cocoa apps :)

Napster of course...

Fetch for FTP (some prefer Transmit)

pCalc for a calulator app

wClock to give you a calendar in the upper right corner of your menubar (I disabled the clock portion of it)

QuakeIIIArena if you're in to gaming :)

How'd you make that screne image into a jpeg? Grab saves images in TIFF format.

I want to know so I can brag to my friends about how cool OS X is. JPEG is the best format.
I tried opening up a TIFF screen shot, but IE requested how I should open it; application, plug-in,
save as file or whatever. I dropped a note to the Mac OS X feedback about this.

I've tried opening it with AppleWorks (5) in Classic but it wouldn't read it.

How'd ya do it?

Go grab photoline 32 (carbon) from versiontracker. it's a photoshop like application :)

There's also Tiffany which is a cocoa based graphic app.
 
What is the dock-like program in the second screen shot? I would love to have a dock which shows program names, but I can't find anything like this on Versiontracker.

I remember seeing that screenshot before and as I recall it was a photoshop edit to show what a good dock would be like, but I don't think that any sort of program exists.

Another cool hack is changing the icons in Finder window toolbar of OS X. <A HREF="http://www.xicons.com/">Xicons.com</A> has a utility called <A HREF="http://www.xicons.com/software/index.phtml">Switcheroo</A> that will do this for you.

Xicons.com is also a great source for thumbnail icons for Mac OS X. They've got tons of them!

Did not work for me either. Tried 'defaults read com.apple.dock, and it said com.apple.dock did not exist.

I tried looking on macosxhints.com, but could find nothing.

Also, how does one make jEdit double-clickable, if at all? It looks real neat, but I do not wish to go to the command line every time.

This does not work with the dock from the Public Beta of Mac OS X.

Are you using a newer developer version?

Please don\'t get our hopes up if this isn\'t a real feature. How would the genie effect work anyways? Would it distort the window but still suck in the bottom edge or would it suck in the side edge depending on which side the dock was on? I would prefer using the side edges if the dock was on the side. I also would like an option to have menus on the side as well. It\'s nice to have options.

I edited this because the Bulletin Board software seems to throw in back slashes needlessly before every \' mark. Is it just me or is this happening to everyone?
