How do you recover data?

I basically had my HD crap out on me after I updated to 10.4.4, but I was able to repair it enough not to still be able to use it, but to be able to load OS X on it and then be able to use it. But is there anyway to recover the data that was on the drive?

Have you tried performing an Archive and Install using the OS X Install discs? This would allow you to install a working OS X system without wiping out your data. All it does is replace the old System folder with a fresh one.
