How do you share internet for email with the firewall on?

Hi, I just used this technique: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107653. My brother has a windows laptop connected to my wife's ibook via ethernet. It let us use an ibook to provide web browsing with the firewall on, but we had to turn the firewall off to enable the email program to work.

How can we get around that one, eh?

This is a guess. If your mail is a pop account, try opening ports 110 (pop3) and 25 (smtp) on the OS X firewall, as you did with port 443. If you use imap, use port 143 instead of 110.
