How does Finder build image icon previews?

I'm so fed up with the way Finder builds image icon previews that I want to write a little cron job (or login script, or whatever's appropriate) to generate icon previews.

Is this possible at all? I checked quickly through the Finder Dictionary (AS) and didn't see anything that looks like it'll let me force making image previews.

I don't want to batch make custom icons, but then again that might be a more permanent solution...
