How much Ram is enough?

I have 512Mb/Ram.......I was looking to upgrade to either 768 or to 1Gb. Adding 256 is a lot cheaper. I don't know what I need, all I know is that 512 is not enough for Photoshop, Flash MX etc.

How much Ram are people using around here, and is it enough?

Can I save money and just and 256 added (on top of 512) or do I have to fork out for 512?

Add 512, Lots of reports about 1.5 GB and more causing problems. 1 GB total (more or less) should be a great help for you, Adding 256 will help also, but add as much as you can reasonably afford, you should see the difference.

the cheapest 512 stick o DDR is $105 from 1800-4-MEMORY, but that is even way cheap. i'm not sure i would trust it to work.

As much as you can:
a) afford
b) fit in your machine (swaping small chips for bigger ones too!)

:)

I say always error on the side of too much...

I've bought from 1-800-4-memory once a while ago and it worked fine. If i buy more i'd buy from them.

Twister

I would go with crucial.com 's memory. You pay a little bit extra but the performance of the ram is much better then the cheap generic chips.

Of course, when RAM prices drop, I have to go out and get a new G4 that uses DDR ram. MacMall had a deal with free extra 512 MB of RAM with G4s and I actually got the Apple Store to match this deal (they would have charged $400 for this 512 MB). 768 on a new G4 seems to be plenty, but I had 1 GB on my G4 450 and that was awesome (and cheap!).
