How to Boot up in Unix

Androo

Yeah, Androo.
wow, i have a lot of problems.... i post things for help a lot...
anyway, something is screwed up with my os x system, something about firmware...
it says this:
"DEFAULT CATCH!, code=FF00700 at %SRR0: 01C00510 %SRR1: 00083070

Open Firmware 2.0.1
To continue booting the MacOS type:
BYE<return>
To continue booting from the default boot device type:
BOOT<return>
For Open Firmware serial I/O type:
TTYA IO<return>
ok"
Well, it's pretty crazy, and none of the options work, so i wanna know how to start up in Unix.
If you give me the answer, i will be forever grateful.... lol
thanks
Androo.

Hold Apple S as you start up. From there there are a few simple commands you can run...
fsck -y: Checks your disk for errors.
reboot: Reboots your computer.
As well as most commands you can run from the Terminal.

thanks soooo much! my grandma bought me this powerbook g3, and if it doesn't work, then she'll go crazy!

Just a strange question... how and why did you get to that screen?

I've used the Open Firmware prompt at start up on my system (you get to it via Cmd-Option-O-F while starting), but I was doing it while running Rhapsody (so I would type: BOOT). Once I switched over to Mac OS X I used it again (that time typing BYE). The thing is, this is not something that a normal user should be seeing.

Can you give us more information about your system and what happen before you got to this point.

It sounds like your problem is in the open firmware, not on the disk or within the mac/unix system. You may need to do a firmware update to get rid of the error.

Also curious about what gave you this screen.

Does it do this every time you boot, or did you boot into OF?

You should run the Apple Hardware Test CD that (should have) came with your computer. If you don't have the CD, I have an image I can send you. That should shed some light onto the problem.

Symphonix is right you might have to run a firmware update, but that might be hard to find, since Software Update tracks updates for you. Try checking here http://www.info.apple.com/support/downloads.html

If the problem persists, call Apple.

Annecdote: I was working on a friend's iMac 800 when their CD drive ceased to open, then 2 reboots later didn't recognize any hardware at all (like the hard disk  ) and would only boot to OpenFirmware. Turns out it was a fried motherboard, and Apple replaced it right away.

I've moved this thread to the Mac Hardware forum, because it sounds like a hardware issue.

I did leave a link in Mac OS X System. . . forum to minimize confusion.
