How To Change Buttons

I haven't figured out how to scroll through the button that will be pressed when I hit return on a menu yet. On a PC the TAB button will do this.
An example of what I'm talking about:
I have a pdf file but it doesn't have a .pdf extension so I select it then hit cmd-i, and change the extension to .pdf. I then get a box pop-up which says "are you sure ..." and the default answer (i.e. if I hit return) is 'Don't add' the extension. So my question is what key do I hit to change the answer to 'Add'? If I hit TAB then it LOOKS as though I have changed the button to 'Add', but in fact I haven't. The heavy outline moves from 'Don't add' to 'Add' but 'Don't add' remains shaded (and the default). When I hit return it doesn't add the .pdf extension and I have to do it again and use the mouse.
Sorry for the stupid question but does anyone know what key(s) I need in this case?

The space bar will trigger the button with the outline around it. The Return key will always trigger the colored/throbbing button.
