How to creat auto-run CD-ROM

Hi folks. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to create an auto-run CD-ROM in Mac OS X...one that upon insertion will launch a program? If this is possible, could you describe the tools and processes that are required to make this happen?

I would prefer direct e-mail responses to <cohenj@umich.edu>.

Regards,

Try this;

Make sure your AppleScript Script Menu widget is enabled. Go to Applications -> AppleScript, and drag "Script Menu.menu" to the main menubar; you'll now have a small AppleScript icon in your menubar.

Make a disk image of the CD that you want to burn (or in fact, an actual *.DMG), and mount that image. Now go to the new Script Menu icon, and select Folder Actions -> Attach Action to Folder -> Open, and navigate to your mounted disk image, select that, and you're done.

A few questions...

When you say "menu bar", are you referring to the Mac OS X "Dock"? If not, what?

How does what you suggest determine which application on the CD-ROM that I want launched on insertion?

Regards,

Jeff Cohen

The menu bar is the bar at the very top of the screen that houses all the menus and also the system clock in the upper right hand side.

That option won't auto run a program but it will automaticaly open up a folder with the executable in it. This is the most popular method of software install on the mac. Instead of automaticaly starting it opens up a folder with a program titled "click here to start" or something to that effect.

As far as a true windows type autorun I'm not sure if you could. Although it is a very interesting question. I've wondered about it myself.

I sure hope that's not possible. That's one of the easiest ways to spread viruses.

...and annoy people. :)

1) When was the last time you saw a virus on a Mac, let alone Mac OS X?

2) It is presumed that when one creates a CD-ROM for mass distribution, one scans the master for viruses before putting it into production.

3) I'd appreciate it if folks would stay on topic with their responses.

Regards,

I heard of someone having 666 (a virus that sets all permises to 666) but that is not OS X native virus. So 1 of thousands of Mac users I've heard... -- Oh wait I do see like once every 15 day a virus but those are in mail and because there are *cough* pc and outlook-viruses :D

1) Just a couple, really. When you get files from hundreds of people, you get viruses.

None on OS X though. :)

2) Presumed, yeah.

3) I don't quite see how I was that off topic...

Meh.
