this is an FYI as I searched for-ever to find a solution to my situation, so I thought I'd share. Previously believed that us G3 owners (Imacs and macs that dont have Intel chipsets were not able to boot from USB drives. I have since found a way to do just that. My Imac's internal CD drive is busted, and I have a DVD installer for OSX, so I found myself a USB cd drive enclosure with a old DVD I popped into. So anyway, to boot from an external drive you can Boot into the startup manager, by holding down the option key on startup, drive icons with available bootable disks will show up on the screen. The usb drive takes abit longer (on mine anyway) to show up. select the CD/DVD and then the left arrow. Im so happy i found this out.
