How to reduce memory used by Thunderbird.

I have Leo installed on my PowerMac G4 and eMac eMac has 512MB RAM and PowerMac has 768MB.

I cannot afford to get more RAM atm. When loaded, Thunderbird takes 478MB RAM to run with Thunderbird running it bogs down the system to a snail's pace. I use the G4 optimized version of Thunderbird. What is the best way to reduce the RAM useage of Thunderbird so it uses much less RAM. Even with 1GB RAM installed 478MB RAM usage is more than any other program I use.
