How to stop wallpapers from being stretched?

Please help. Everytime I use the System Preferences->Desktop to set a wallpaper, the default seems to be a stretched image. Some of my images come out warped because the resolution does not match my screen.

I noticed also there is no option to tile a background image.

Any suggestions?

tinker tool is your friend!

install it and you will see tinker tool in your system preferences and there you can set how the background image should be placed!
