HP 3320 Deskjet problem

f_h_petrone

Mac User
Brand New Deskjet,
System 9.2
iMac 350 (CRT)

reeeeealy easy to install bla bla bla.....
setup, restart....

the printer icon appears on the desktop...

10 seconds later anotherone appeared
10 seconds later anotherone
and so on.
I went to the bathroom, returned and I had 234 printer icons on the desktop.
:)
each one had a different number instead of a common name. that's why I know there were 234.

And there's no way I can make any program to print a page.
Tried:
reinstalling printer software,
plugging-unplugging the whole system to a prymary USB port (no hubs, I mean).

HP tech support did not know what a Macintosh was (I almost yelled at him but.... what do they know, anyway)

Can anyone help me before I put my 50 Kg foot on its open lid?
hehe

Thanks!

First, go to the Apple Menu>Control panels>Extension Manager.
When that window comes up, scroll through and uncheck (click on the box with the check mark to make the check mark go away)
Desktop Printer Spooler
Desktop PrintMonitor

Now save that set and close the window. Restart the computer. All those icons will show up with an X on them. You can drag them to the trash and empty the trash.

now go to the Apple Menu>Chooser and hold down the option and apple keys as you select Chooser. You will hear an alert sound. Now release the keys and the chooser will come up. Select the HP printer icon on the left and then you should see USB HP.... at the right, click on that once. Now make sure AppleTalk is off and close the window. You should be able to print now.

Thanks Cheryl!
Now, for the only sake of knowledge...

can you tell me what did I do?
I mean, why do these steps fix the problem?

What WAS the original problem anyway...?

thanks a lot

really.
I was desperate
:)

Do you have Adobe Type Manger installed? It will appear as “ATM” In your extensions set. That, or any other font managing software can cause that so called “Rabbit Effect”

Make sure you say "Macintosh" when you call 1-800-hp-inven. I've mistakenly not followed the prompt correctly a few times. They do have a Macintosh Deskjet support team, and they do a great job!

Maybe in the US....

but not in this pityfull little country we are used to call Argentina
:(

But thanks anyway!
the link you posted was very good
:)

f_h,

What you did was turned off Desktop printing. Some printers do not work well with that.

Then what you did was clear the memory of the chooser. It was confused. Now it knows what it is suppose to do. :)

Cheryl,
I did exactly as you told me... again (because i did it once, and for a while it worked) but now no icons appear on the desktop and i still cant print...
any ideas?
HP says i have to ditch ATM and Suitcase, but if I dont have that ¿would I still have smooth characters on large size font?

Disable ATM and suitcase. Do you have more than 128 fonts? If you do, I suggest you pull out the ones that you do not use. Or get a font manager (there is a shareware one available - but I can not remember the name- I use to use it. I finally decided that many of those fonts I really do not use.)

As long as you are using truetype fonts - you shouldn't have any problem.

Disabling the desktop printer got rid of the icon on the desktop. After you disable ATM and Suitcase, check to see if you can print. If not, go to the Extension Manager, turn on both desktop printing extensions, restart the computer, then go to the chooser - hold down the option and the apple keys until you hear the alert sound. Now release the keys, select the printer.

Now try printing.

We don't have any font managers on this computer, the beige G3 running 9.2.2 (last time anybody tried to enable ATM it totally f*cked with the computer), and we have more than 128 fonts enabled with no problems. I doubt you need a font manager.
