hp deskjet960c - connected to Airport Extreme Base- no access to utility

Since connecting my hp deskjet 960c to the USB printer port on the Airport Extreme Base station, I no longer have access to the hp utility program. I can't check ink levels or clean the heads.

Is there any way round this apart from reconnecting the printer directly to the computer?

To use printer utilities, you must connect the printer directly to the Macintosh computer.
